I have been playing with the straight arm recovery. It is ideally suited for my over arm side stroke since the arms reciprocate/one pulls, the other recovers. I found that this is essential for the straight arm technique. If you are using more of a catch up type arm pull, like the slightly bent arm, or even if you are doing more of a catch up with straight arms, it doesn't do much of anything. I guess it is like the flutter kick, where one goes up, as the other goes down, and they both contribute in an action/reaction thing… Kind of like that little Asian hand drum you twirl in your hands like in the Karate Kid…
We have a 10 workout program available now. It is focused on short freestyle training. It will help you gain speed and also put in practice a good freestyle technique. Click here to learn more about it: https://skillswimming.com/swordfish/
I don't swim, but i like to go to pool and swim,i've found a great way to swim fast and not get tired. I swam 25m in less than 13 seconds, though i still have to learn to breathe this way. Basically what i do is pull my arm behind and push it forward from the air into water as far and hard as i can(i don't hit water,i slide into it and let it pull me) – with 4 of those strokes i swam around 10 meters, and then i took breathe and slowed down, don't know to breathe freestyle.
You went 12.5s per 25m. That's not fast unfortunately. Sun Yang and Paltrinieri do 13.4 per 25 in their 1500m races – Cruising. And your way to finish touch is really bad, that's broken fingers waiting to happen. Look at Olympic sprint races and see how they touch properly.
this is good! I feel like you can use this technique also for the 100 freestyle but with a higher elbow catch. and towards the end you can a have no breath finish with a deeper catch like nathan adrian finish. Vladimir morozov uses the straight arm freestyle recovery for a full 100 same with florent manaudou.
00:00:11,219 –> 00:00:14,243 There are basically two ways to swim fast freestyle.
00:00:14,334 –> 00:00:20,233 By fast freestyle we refer to a distance of 25 or 50 meters or yards.
00:00:20,595 –> 00:00:23,615 There is the straight arm and the classic arm.
00:00:24,008 –> 00:00:28,335 The straight arm fast freestyle has become popular among sprinters.
00:00:28,573 –> 00:00:34,563 This technique consist basically on spinning your arms as fast as you can with a straight arm recovery.
00:00:35,128 –> 00:00:41,528 The main advantage of this technique is that as soon as the arm touches the water it is also pulling.
00:00:42,027 –> 00:00:48,989 Underwater the straight arm catches deeper water pushing the swimmer upwards and forwards.
00:00:49,346 –> 00:00:54,273 This requires a lot of effort and shoulder strength to maintain.
00:00:54,582 –> 00:01:01,462 That is why you will only see this technique used effectively by the sprinters in the 50 free.
00:01:09,051 –> 00:01:15,335 There is a second way to sprint freestyle which is recovering with a small elbow bend,
00:01:15,446 –> 00:01:21,062 but you still want to catch the water deeply with a very slightly bend arm underwater.
00:01:21,398 –> 00:01:29,629 In both techniques there is little need to rotate the shoulders as the arms move so fast that rotating a lot would be a waste of time.
00:01:30,014 –> 00:01:34,783 To do a fast freestyle it is essential that you kick as fast as you can.
00:01:35,002 –> 00:01:38,780 There should be water splashing behind you as if you had a motor.
00:01:39,217 –> 00:01:48,217 In a 50 freestyle there is very little margin of error, that is why you need an explosive start and flip turn.
00:01:54,153 –> 00:02:03,010 Finally, very often you can win or lose by a tenth of a second so a good final touch can make you win the race.
00:02:03,380 –> 00:02:06,133 The final stroke is a little longer than the rest.
00:02:07,171 –> 00:02:13,069 You stretch your body as fast and far as you can, rotating more to your side.
00:02:13,596 –> 00:02:17,577 You should touch with your fingers not with the palm of your hands.
00:02:17,709 –> 00:02:23,511 Just strong enough to activate the touch pad but not strong enough that you injure your fingers.
00:02:24,097 –> 00:02:31,998 This takes practice to master, so start slow and build up speed to touch the wall properly.
00:02:32,077 –> 00:02:38,076 In the next video I will show you some exercises you can do to build up speed when you swim freestyle.
